Stephen Murphy is Professor of Counselor Education and director of the rehabilitation counseling program. Prior to coming to the University of Southern Maine, Professor Murphy taught at Syracuse University from 1977-95, and before that at the University of New Hampshire from 1974-77. He received his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and earned his bachelors degree from Holy Cross College.

In addition to his academic positions, Dr. Murphy worked as assistant psychologist at the Mansfield Training School, Mansfield Connecticut (1968-70); was a counseling psychologist at the Veterans Administration Hospital-Lyons, New Jersey (1974-75); and served as executive director of the Pioneer Center, Syracuse New York (1987-90) while on leave from Syracuse University.

Professor Murphy’s research interests include community inclusion of people with disabilities and client perspectives on disability issues and rehabilitation practices. He has published numerous articles, chapters, and books on these topics. His most recent book is a forthcoming history of Maine’s largest institution for persons with intellectual disabilities, the title of which is Leaving Pineland: From Servitude to Self-Determination. The Legacy of Feeblemindedness in Maine.

A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Dr Murphy and his wife, Nancy, have three grown children. He and his family enjoy cycling, jogging, hiking and the rich array of other outdoor activities for which Maine is so widely known.
